Perkins Named Big 12 Player of the Week

DALLAS - Texas Tech's Jia Perkins was named Big 12 Women's Basketball Player of the Week and Baylor's Sophia Young was named Big 12 Rookie of the Week for the final games of the regular season, the conference office announced Friday.

Perkins, a 5-8 junior guard, helped lead Texas Tech to a 73-64 upset of No. 4 Kansas State. For the game, the Granbury, Texas, native poured in a game-high 26 points while adding five rebounds, four assists, four steals and two blocks. Perkins shot 70.6 percent from the field as she hit 12-of-17 attempts. She shot 100 percent from the free throw line, going 2-for-2. Perkins is currently second on the team in scoring with a 16.4 average and is third in rebounding at 5.4 boards per contest. She has now scored 1,407 career points which is just one-point shy of tying for ninth on Tech's all-time scoring list.

For the 13th time this season, Young recorded a double-double with a 16-point, 13-rebound performance in Baylor's 89-46 victory over Oklahoma State on Wednesday. The 6-1 freshman forward also tied her career-high in steals with seven against the Cowgirls. Young was 7-of-11 from the floor and added an assist and a blocked shot in 29 minutes of play. Of her 13 rebounds, seven were on the offensive end. The St. Vincent, West Indies, native led the Lady Bears in both scoring and rebounding for the sixth time this season. Young averages 13.4 points and a league-leading 9.5 rebounds a game. Among Big 12 players she ranks No. 1 in rebounding and second in double-doubles (13) and is No. 3 in field goal percentage (.560), 3rd in steals (2.54) and 13th in blocked shots (1.29).
