LUBBOCK, Texas - Kansas withheld a four-run Texas Tech rally late in the game and Matt Tribble picked up a two-out RBI single in the top of the ninth to give the Jayhawks a 7-6 win over the Red Raiders on Sunday afternoon at Dan Law Field. The win gives Kansas its first series victory over Texas Tech in school history.
Both teams put up one run in each in the first as Ryan Baty got an inside-the-park home run that bounced off the left field wall. Tech left fielder Scooter Jordan dove into the wall on the play and couldn't get up and Baty went all the way home on the play.
Tech quickly answered when Josh Haney delivered an RBI single to left field plating Scooter Jordan who led off the inning with a walk.
Kansas took a 4-1 lead in the second as the Jayhawks pounded Tech starter Corey Gerstner for three runs on four hits.
Kansas pushed its lead to 6-2 in the fourth thanks to a two-RBI single by Sean Flynn that scored Travis Metcalf and Casey Spanish.
The Red Raiders plated one in the sixth on a home run by Christian Colonel. The homer by Colonel is his second of the season. Junior first baseman Doug Beck got Tech back in the game win the seventh when he delivered a two-out two-run home run over the left-center field wall, pulling Tech to within one.
Sophomore outfielder Cody Fuller hit his first career home run in the eighth to tie the score, when he belted a solo shot over into the left field bullpen.
With one out in the ninth, Kansas' Ritchie Price reached on a controversial call as the home plate umpired ruled that he had been hit-by-a-pitch that was thrown behind him. Price scored what turned out to be the winning run later in the inning on an Matt Tribble RBI single that went straight up the middle.
Nathan Fouts was tagged with the loss for Texas Tech despite a stellar outing in which he pitched seven innings of relief allowing nine hits, three earned runs and struckout six. Brandon Johnson earned the win for Kansas as he pitched 2 1/3 allowing one earned run on two hits.
Texas Tech will hit the road for a midweek match-up against New Mexico on Tuesday afternoon in Albuquerque. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Lobo Field. Following Tuesday's game, Tech will travel to Manhattan, Kan., for a three game series against Kansas State.
