LUBBOCK, Texas - Taking the field for the last time this spring, the Texas Tech women's soccer team wrapped up its spring exhibition schedule with a pair of wins last Saturday. The team kicked off the day by blasting Angelo State, 5-2, and returned to R. P. Fuller Stadium hours later to shutout the Texas Tech Alumni team, 1-0.
In the opening game the Red Raiders got off to a rocky start, falling behind 1-0 in the game's opening minutes, but rallied to take a 2-1 lead into the locker room at the half. Junior Kerri Campbell (Duncanville, Texas) knotted the game at a goal apiece midway through the first half as she fired an arching shot over the keeper. Catie Arsenault (Keller, Texas) put the Red Raiders ahead for good minutes later as she got isolated in front of the goal and hammered a shot into the back of the net. Arsenault would add another goal in the second half, while Nicole Frilot (Albuquerque, N.M.) and Lindsy McMahon (Arlington, Texas) also netted second half tallies.
A group of former Tech players, including assistant coach Jamie Woods, were the next Red Raider opponent of the day. The game was a hard fought contest with the current Tech players plotting the only goal of the match, early in the second period. Freshman Karen Stephens (Denton, Texas) broke the scoreless tie as she ripped a shot past former Red Raider JoDee Campbell. Freshmen Beth Lippert (Woodinville, Washington) and Megan Knauss (Tigard, Oregon) earned a combined shutout for Tech.
The Red Raiders finish up the spring exhibition season with a 3-1 record and will began preparations for next season when the team returns from summer break in the fall. Tech will kick off its 2003 season when it hosts New Mexico on Aug. 29 at R. P. Fuller Stadium.
