WACO, Texas - What began as a battle for ninth place in the Big 12 left Baylor and Tech in the same position as the series was split with a 2-0 Baylor win and a 1-0 Tech win today at Getterman Stadium in Waco, Texas.
It was a defensive battle as both teams had only one hit entering into the fourth but Baylor threatened Tech with two hits including a double by Sarah Caudle putting the Lady Bears in scoring position. A walk left the bases loaded but Baylor was kept off board with a ground out to pitcher Erin Crawford.
Not wanting to go into extra innings, Baylor landed five men on base off three hits, a walk and fielders choice in the bottom of the sixth. Caudle and April Luce singles gave the Lady Bears two runs to cap a 2-0 Baylor win. The team finished with three hits off singles by Shayne Gipson, Esmerelda Perez and Amanda Douglas.
The second game of the doubleheader noted the 100th game at Getterman Stadium but it would not get a win. For the first time this season, Perez stole second after landing on base with a walk. Perez was the 2002 season leader in walks with 16.
Perez got the first hit of the game in the third and Amanda Douglas followed with a single in the fourth but no runs were scored by either team heading into the fifth. In the top of the sixth, an Elyssa Sigala single crossed Perez, who reached on an error, over home plate.
Once again in the sixth, Baylor threatened Tech with bases loaded. However, a double play kept Baylor runs off the board and Tech entered the seventh with a 1-0 lead. Baylor had two singles in the seventh with players on first and third, however, no runs were plated and Tech logged its third conference win. This win also marks Head coach Bobby Reeves 99th win.
Play will continue for the Lady Raiders this weekend as they head to Lincoln, Neb. to take on the #6 Cornhuskers.
