LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech worked out in the West Texas sun for the first time during the preseason Sunday afternoon at the grass practice fields southeast of Jones SBC Stadium. The Red Raiders were initially set to work out during the day for the first time on Saturday, but soaring temperatures during the previous week forced Tech to move that practice to the evening. Sunday's high showed some mercy, peaking at 93 degrees.
The Red Raider practiced for 2 ? hours in helmets and shoulder pads for the third day in a row. The team was supposed to begin full pad workouts Sunday, but will delay until Monday's two-a-day drills. Tech's Monday workouts are scheduled for 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
Most of Sunday's practice was geared toward improving technique as all units worked on footwork, blocking, pass breakups, passing routes and defensive reads. One period was dedicated to special teams work as well.
Junior college transfer Tommie Pratt joined the team for Sunday's workout. The junior college transfer from San Jose, Calif., made the drive to Lubbock following his final class late last week at City College of San Francisco.
Texas Tech opens the season against SMU Sat., Aug. 30, at 6 p.m. at Jones SBC Stadium. For ticket information, contact the Texas Tech Athletic Ticket Office at (888) GO-BIG-12 or 742-TECH.
