GETTING STARTED
The Texas Tech women's soccer team will kick off the 2003 season this weekend as the Lady Raiders will host the New Mexico Lobos on Friday night at 7 p.m. at R.P. Fuller Stadium. Following Friday night's game, Texas Tech will hit the road for Oklahoma where the team will battle Oral Roberts at 7 p.m. on Sunday night.
LADY RAIDERS LOOK FOR IMPROVEMENT IN 2003
Head coach Felix Oskam will be the first to admit that the Lady Raiders need to step it up this season. In 2002, the soccer program won just two games as they finished at 2-17 overall and 0-10 in the Big 12 Conference. The last winning season for Texas Tech came in 1996 when the team went 13-8 and 5-4 in the Big 12.
With an influx of new talent, Oskam is optimistic that 2003 will bring about new results for the Lady Raiders. The team picked up some quality talent in freshmen Meghan Blume, Jennifer Vasquez, Megan Huntoon and Jenna Wetzel as well as the services of Kim Warren who transferred to Tech from Western Kentucky.
THIS AND THAT
- Texas Tech is 4-5 all-time in season openers through nine seasons of play.
- The 2003 captains are seniors Kerri Campbell, Catie Arsenault and Tiana Boyea. Campbell was a second-team All-Big 12 selection last season and will anchor the midfield.
- Injuries have already been a factor this season as Texas Tech was forced to cancel its exhibition game against Midwestern State. A projected lineup will not be decided until Friday due to the injury situation.
