Tech Volleyball Kicks Off Season With Two Wins

LUBBOCK, Texas - Like years before, the Red Raider volleyball squad kicked off its season with two wins at the Islander Invitational in Corpus Christi, Texas. Tech entered the tournament 22-6 in season openers and moved to 23-6 after a season opening win over Sam Houston State in four sets, 30-27, 30-26, 27-30 and 30-27.
Against Sam Houston State, junior Laura Grote recorded 16 digs, surpassing her career high of 15 that was set last year against Kansas State.
Tech improved in its second match of the day, shutting out Southern Miss in three sets, 30-25, 30-25, 30-17. Angela Mooney led the team in kills with 16, while Kelly Johnson contributed 14. Three freshman, Christina Miller, Robyn Bucy and Kiley Lyons, earned playing time for the first time as Red Raiders with Lyons logging eight kills, third highest on the team.
Tech (2-0) continues play tomorrow with an 11:30 a.m. match versus North Carolina A&T and will conclude play with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 7:30 p.m.
