LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) - B.J. Symons threw for three touchdowns in his first start as Texas Tech beat SMU 58-10 Saturday night in the opener for both teams.
Symons, replacing the record-setting Kliff Kingsbury, was poised and accurate. He finished 23-for-38 for 297 yards.
Red Raiders running back Taurean Henderson rushed for two touchdowns and caught a pass for a third. Texas Tech's Wes Welker tied a NCAA record for career touchdowns on punt returns with his seventh, racing down the sideline for a 50-yard score.
Moments later, Tech lineman Adell Duckett tipped a pass by SMU's Richard Bartel to himself and ran it in from the 5-yard line.
Henderson ran for 3-yard and 25-yard scores in the second quarter before catching a 33-yard pass from Symons to give Tech a 24-3 halftime lead.
Tech's lead grew to 31-3 on the opening drive of the second half after Johnnie Mack took the kickoff in the end zone and returned it to SMU's 20. Seven plays later, Symons connected for his second touchdown, finding Nehemiah Glover for an 18-yard score.
SMU scored on a field goal on its opening possession and then was held scoreless until Bartel threw a 9-yard pass to Matt Rushbrook early in the fourth quarter.
Mustangs running back Keylon Kincaide finished with 93 yards on 29 carries.
