LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech senior guard Toby Cecil (Richardson, Texas/Berkner) praised the newcomers following the Red Raiders' first day of workouts in preparation for the 2003 season. The Red Raider completed the initial 2 ?-hour workout in shorts and headgear Wednesday.
"First, we had a great practice today," Cecil said. "The new guys came in and did a good job. They all hustled around and made the most of their reps. Especially on the first day when they really haven't gotten a feel for what's going on, I thought they did really well."
Head coach Mike Leach shared Cecil's sentiments, citing a "good first day of workouts" and paying a bit of respect to the newcomers as "one of the better crews we've had in the last four seasons. They all did impressive things."
The heat dominated the early portion of the practice, which began at 6 p.m., but a small rain shower cooled temperatures and brought an accompanying breeze to make the evening more bearable. Freshman defensive back Chad Johnson (Shreveport, La./Evangel) welcomed the weather.
"It felt good out here tonight," Johnson said. "It's not as humid here as it is in Shreveport. This was a great first workout and a great day."
The Red Raiders continue preseason preparations with a pair of 6:30 p.m. workouts Thursday and Friday on the grass practice fields southeast of Jones SBC Stadium.
