LUBBOCK, Texas - The Rimington Trophy Committee announced today that Red Raider senior center Toby Cecil (Richardson, Texas/Berkner) has been added to the Rimington Trophy Watch List for the 2003 season. The award has been given annually since the 2000 season to the nation's top collegiate center.
Cecil has been a mainstay in the Texas Tech offensive line throughout his career and has played at both center and guard. Cecil currently ranks second in the county among collegiate offensive linemen with 38-straight starts, a streak that began during his freshman season.
The award is named for Dave Rimington, college football's most decorated offensive lineman. Rimington is the only player ever to win the Outland Trophy twice. The former University of Nebraska center also won the Lombardi Rotary Award in 1982 and was named a two-time consensus All-America center and two-time Academic All-American during his career.
The Rimington Trophy, established in 2000, is co-sponsored by Black and Decker and Canon, USA. Past Winners include Brett Romberg of Miami in 2002, LeCharles Bentley of Ohio State in 2001 and Nebraska's Dominic Raiola in 2000. The 2003 award will be presented Dec. 13 in Lincoln, Neb., with proceeds from the Rimington Trophy presentation benefiting the Boomer Esiason Foundation and it's fight against cystic fibrosis.
