LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech head women's basketball coach Marsha Sharp announced today that senior guard Jia Perkins has departed the Lady Raider program for medical reasons.
"Certainly this is some adversity that we did not expect," said Sharp. "Jia has been a great part of our program during her career and has been a part of some big wins. However, I do believe in the incredible mentality of this team and will expect them to play at a high and competitive level for the remainder of the season. Fortunately, we have a lot of individuals capable of stepping up to this challenge. We wish Jia nothing but the best in her future."
The Granbury, Texas, native was leading the team in scoring with a 16.5 average and had started all 16 games for the Lady Raiders. In 2003, Perkins was a first team All-Big 12 selection, named honorable mention Kodak All-America and honorable mention All-America by the Associated Press. Perkins finishes her career at Tech as the fourth all-time leading scorer with 1,768 points, while second on the career steals list with 305.
As a policy, Sharp will not comment on this issue any further.
