The Lady Raider Nation turned out in full force today at the United Spirit Arena. Several thousand fans were in attendance at the season's first exhibition game to watch the Lady Raiders soundly defeat the West Coast All-Stars 101-52. Lone senior Cisti Greenwalt led the way on offense with 18 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks. Player of the Game Chesley Dabbs also reached double digits with 16 points, five assists and four steals. She dominated the first half with 13 points, four assists and two steals.
"I thought it was a great start and I was really proud of the way we came out and played from the very beginning of the game. Something I was most interested to see is if we could play as confident and aggressive in the game as we have been playing in practice and I think we did that," said head coach Marsha Sharp.
"I think it was good to get out there and prove what the team as a whole did this summer. I think it showed today that we are going to be really deep and that we have worked really hard as a team to get to this point," Greenwalt added.
The Lady Raiders slowly chipped away at the West Coast All-Stars, dominating the boards the entire game. Both teams started fast, but good movement on offense and great play execution by the Lady Raiders were too much for the All-Stars to handle.
"Our shooting percentage was nearly 72 percent today because we got each other great shots, we moved the ball well, and we've felt like in practice that's a trademark and it's something we can build on," added Sharp.
Freshman Darrice Griffin was an imposing force on the court, creating an immediate impact when she entered the game in the first half. Her 12 points were capped by two steals, one on an inbound followed by her first shot as a Lady Raider.
"Her first collegiate bucket typifies what she's all about. She got a steal, made a spin move and scored. She's got great talent and is beginning to understand our offense a little better. She has a chance to be a very special player here," said Sharp.
Forward LaToya Davis also shined on the court, starting off the second half with back to back shots in the paint. She led the second half with 13 points, four rebounds and a steal. Junior Erin Grant was three for three outside the three point line for a total of 11 points, nine assists and two steals.
"They played terrific. I'm really proud for them because I know what they've done over the summer to prepare for today. To watch them have success is the best part about coaching by far. They've spent a lot of time in this gym and in weight rooms and running up and down stairs to try to get ready to make this happen. I hope this is a glimpse and just the beginning of a lot of great things for them," said Sharp.
