LUBBOCK, Texas - Grande Valley Dorados Head Coach Gary Gussman recently announced that former Texas Tech wide receiver Rodney Blackshear will assist the coaching staff as Offensive Coordinator/Player Personnel.
Blackshear, a native of Houston, Texas, was a member of Spike Dykes' inaugural recruiting class at Texas Tech University, where he lettered from 1987-1991. He led the Raiders in receiving in 1990 (44 rec., 973 yds, 9 TDs) and 1991 (30 rec., 649 yds, 5 TDs). Blackshear is also tied third at Tech with nine single-season TD receptions in 1990. Overall, he ranks fourth in career yardage (1,980) and is tied for third with 14 career receiving touchdowns on Tech's all-time list.
Following Blackshear's career at Tech, he played in the Arena Football League (AFL) for five seasons - four of which were in his hometown of Houston. He spent the '96 and '97 seasons playing for the Texas Terror and suited up for the Houston Thunder Bears during the '98 and '99 seasons. Blackshear totaled 204 receptions for 2,482 yards and 45 receiving touchdowns during those four seasons. The 1998 AFL All-America First-Team selection rounded out his career with the 2001 Arena Bowl Champion Rapids Rampage.
"Rodney was a very smart and tough player in the AFL. I have coached him and after seeing what he has done as a player, I know that he knows the game very well and I look for him to transfer the knowledge and habits he had, as a player, into a coaching capacity to educate our players," said Head Coach Gary Gussman.
Blackshear has had coaching experience on the college level as a student assistant wide receivers coach for Texas Tech in 2002.
