Feb. 4, 2004
LUBBOCK, Texas - Eighteen high school seniors and five junior college transfers signed the dotted line with plans to enroll at Texas Tech University in August 2004 and play football for the Red Raiders. The signees join two other recruits who enrolled at Tech in January, completing the class of 25 newcomers.
The 2004 class is listed as the 16th best by TheInsiders.com and is rated among the top 25 by various other recruiting publications and websites. The class also is the fourth-best among Big 12 schools, according to TheInsiders.com. Rivals.com ranks the Texas Tech quarterback class second among the nation's signing groups.
"Our staff has worked hard to sign what we know to be a top-notch recruiting class," Texas Tech head football coach Mike Leach said. "We answered a lot of questions at several key positions and look forward to getting these players in here and plugging them into our scheme."
The 25 players comprising this year's class come from six states - Texas (17), California (2), Florida (2), Georgia (2), Illinois and Oklahoma. QB Robert Johnson (Americus, Ga./Reedley College) and DL Brett Bischofberger (Oroville, Calif./Butte College) enrolled in January.
As listed by position, Texas Tech adds to its roster five defensive backs, five receivers, five defensive linemen, three offensive linemen, two quarterbacks, two linebackers, a running back, a center and an athlete.
Of the seven junior college players, two were named JUCO All-Americans - DE Deke Bake (Sacramento, Calif./Fresno City College) and Johnson. Freshman QB Graham Harrell (Ennis, Texas/Ennis) was named to several All-America teams and was named the Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of Texas.
Among the 25 players are two who attended Texas Tech Football camps in the past - WR Eric Morris (Shallowater, Texas/Shallowater) and DE Jake Ratliff (Lawton, Okla./Eisenhower).
Other highlights include:
- Tech signed two Five-Star recruits - Johnson and WR Marquis Johnson (Champaign, Ill./Hutchinson CC)
- Tech signed four Four-Star recruits - Bake, Harrell, LB Sylvester Brinkley (Stuart, Fla./Reedley College) and Harrell's high school teammate WR Anthony Jenkins (Ennis, Texas/Ennis)
