SAN MARCOS, Texas - One big inning proved to be the difference between winning and losing for the Lady Raider softball team this afternoon as they allowed five runs in the fourth inning and fell to Tulsa 9-4 at the Bobcat Softball Classic in San Marcos, TX.
It was the Lady Raiders who drew first blood in the opening inning of the game as junior Kelly Rhyne drove in second baseman Britney Stolle who had reached on an error. Tulsa responded in the bottom of the first inning scoring two runs of their own on a pair of hits.
Brandy Moulin put Tech back into the lead in the bottom of the third inning when she doubled to drive in Elyssa Sigala and Lisa Lawler putting the Lady Raiders back in front 3-2. The double was the first career hit for Moulin, who was making her first collegiate start. The freshman from McLoud, Okla., also drew a pair of walks at the plate.
The fourth inning proved to be Tech's undoing as Tulsa exploded to score five runs on six hits and break the game wide open. Tulsa chased Tech starter Keely Tucker who was hit hard in the inning and was replaced by freshman Kassy Planck, who pitched the final number 3 1/3 innings.
Tech battled back in the bottom of the fourth scoring a run to cut the Tulsa lead to 7-4. Freshman catcher Ashley Parker beat out a bunt for her second hit of the game and stole second to put her in a position to score when Stolle singled two batters later.
Tulsa added a pair of insurance runs to push their lead to 9-4 and seal the fate of the Lady Raider.
Texas Tech softball will return to the field tomorrow for day two of the Texas State Softball Classic when they will face tournament host Texas State at 11am and UTSA at 5pm.
