SAN MARCOS, Texas - Junior catcher Lisa Lawler hit her first homerun of the season and drove in a pair of runs but it was not enough to lead the Lady Raiders to victory as the Texas State Bobcats scored a pair of seventh inning runs to defeat the Lady Raiders 4-3 this afternoon at the Bobcat Softball Classic in San Marcos, TX.
The Bobcats (4-0) got on the board in the top of the first as they put together a pair of hits and drew a walk off of Tech starting pitcher Julie Hauch. The Lady Raiders responded in the bottom of the inning as freshman Ashley Parker, who finished the game with three hits, lead off the inning with a bunt single and was eventually drove in by a Lawler double.
Texas State scored again in the top of the second, when leadoff hitter Kristen Zaleski tripled and scored when the Lady Raiders delayed returning the ball to the pitcher.
Lawler tied up the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the third, when she connected on a 2-1 pitch and drove it over the leftfield wall for a solo homerun.
Tech got out of the jam in the fourth when Zaleski doubled with a runner on first. As Zaleski rounded second she attempted to go to third but the base was occupied by another base runner. The Lady Raiders capitalized on the Texas State miscue by getting both players out to get out of the inning unscathed.
The Bobcats loaded the bases in the top of the fifth and with one out, Hauch was lifted for sophomore Erin Crawford who came in to get two quick outs and keep the Bobcats off the scoreboard and leave the game knotted at 2-2. It was Crawford who again had to navigate out of trouble in the sixth, when the Bobcats place runners on second and third with only one out. Crawford was able to induce a groundout and strike out Katie Ann Trahan to end the inning.
The Bobcats were not done as they came to bat in the top of the seventh needing a run to stay alive. Rachel Bonetti reached on a walk and was followed by Hannah Snow who reached base after being hit by a pitch. Amy Cruger followed with a 2-1 double to give Texas State a 4-3 lead. In the bottom of the inning, Tech could not return the favor going in order to end the game.
Texas Tech softball will face off later this afternoon against UTSA and will conclude play at the Texas State Softball Classic when they battle New Mexico State at 10am on Sunday morning.
