LAS CRUCES, NM - Senior Elyssa Sigala broke the school record with her 14th consecutive game with a hit as Texas Tech softball defeated New Mexico State 5-3 at NMSU Softball Complex in Las Cruces, NM on Wednesday afternoon for the team's fifth straight win.
Lady Raider starter Erin Crawford (6-5) got out of a jam in the bottom of the first, as the lead off batter reached second on a throwing error and moved over on a wild pitch. After a hit batter put runners at first and third with only one out, Crawford induced a double play to end the inning and keep the Aggies off the scoreboard.
Tech would get on the board in the top of the third inning, scoring four runs to take the lead. Natalie Kula led off the inning with a single through the left side of the infield. With one out in the inning, a bunt by Ashley Parker was thrown over the head of the first basemen allowing Kula to score and Parker to advance to third. Natalie Enderlin would follow and reach on an error, which allowed Parker to score. The next batter would be Elyssa Sigala, who would slam a pitch high over the wall in right center field for her seventh home run of the season and a 4-0 Tech lead.
The home run by Sigala would extend a career high hitting streak for the senior to 13 games, which set a new school record for longest hitting streak by a Texas Tech player.
In the top of the seventh inning, Ashleigh Renfro reached second on a error to lead off the inning. After a sacrifice by Kula moved Renfro to third, she was able to score when Ashley Parker reached on a error by the first basemen.
The Aggies (7-25) would not go quietly in the bottom of the seventh, scoring three runs to cut the lead to 5-3 before Julie Hauck entered the game in relief of Crawford to get her first save of the season.
The Lady Raiders have now won 10 of the last 12 games and move their record to 14-16.
Texas Tech softball face New Mexico State in game two of the doubleheader at 5 p.m. MST and will be back in action on Friday when they will travel to Albuquerque, NM, to take on the New Mexico Lobos in a doubleheader with games starting at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. MST.
