LUBBOCK, Texas - While the Texas Tech football program and strength and conditioning staff enjoyed a successful event in the inaugural "Night of Champions," members of the Red Raider football team reached new heights and personal goals during the evening's weight lifting demonstration.
While several team members accomplished personal bests, it was a pair of redshirt freshmen who dazzled the crowd with their strength and stole the show. Manny Ramirez, an offensive lineman from Houston Willowridge, and Ken Scott, a defensive tackle from Newton, Texas, established school marks in the bench press and squat, respectively.
Ramirez benched a record 515 on his first attempt, but wanted more added, before setting the record with a bar-bending 525 pounds. The mark broke the previous record of 490 pounds, set by former offensive lineman Casey Keck.
Scott became the first Red Raider to squat 700 pounds in a one-time maximum repetition. Others have reached the 700 mark, but did so by using a formula that combined several reps of a lower weight. Scott is the first to reach 700 pounds on one lift.
