Defense Steps Up in Second Spring Scrimmage

LUBBOCK, Texas - After allowing seven touchdowns a week ago in the first scrimmage of the spring, the Texas Tech defense clamped down and held the Red Raider offense to three touchdowns, including one in seven-on-seven drills. The defensive unit grabbed three interceptions, returning one for a score, and registered three sacks in the 80-play scrimmage.
For the second week in a row, safety Josh Rangel led the defense with six tackles, including four solo, while safety Chad Johnson returned an interception for a touchdown. He also finished the morning with four and half tackles. Redshirt freshman safety Joe Garcia also finished with four and half tackles as the secondary claimed the top three spots on the tackles list. Linebacker Brock Stratton also had a pick, while cornerback James Conwright grabbed a pick in seven-on-seven competition.
The defensive ends also came up big, registering four of the five sacks. Junior college transfer Brett Bischofberger logged one and a half sacks from his defensive end position, while end Sione Havili also registered one and a half sacks. End Keyunta Dawson had a solo sack as did Stratton.
Offensively, Sonny Cumbie completed 14 of-20 passes for 155 yards and a touchdown, while Joel Filani led the receiving corps with six catches for 101 yards. Cody Hodges finished 9-of-13 for 124 yards, while Robert Johnson threw two interceptions in an 11-of-17 day for 62 yards. In seven-on-seven drills, Phillip Daugherty was 12-of-18 for 139 yards and a touchdown.
In addition to Filani, Jarrett Hicks hauled in six receptions for 68 yards, including a 14-yard grab for a touchdown. Trey Haverty followed with five receptions for 53 yards, while tight end Bristol Olomua, in his first scrimmage appearance of the spring, caught three passes for 44 yards.
The Red Raiders will conduct their 12th practice of the spring at 10 a.m. Monday at the grass practice fields southeast of Jones SBC Stadium. Monday's practice was originally scheduled for 3 p.m., but has been moved up due to no classes on the extended Easter holiday weekend.
Texas Tech will conclude its spring drills with the annual Red-Black Spring Game on Sat., April 17. Festivities begin at 9:30 a.m. with a ribbon-cutting at the new Football Training Facility. The Alumni Game will kick things off on the field at 10 a.m.; followed by the spring game at 11 a.m. Admission to the event is free.
