Recharged Red Raiders Take On Kansas State The Texas Tech baseball team opened a nine-game homestand on Tuesday and the Red Raiders hope to keep some recent momentum going this weekend as the Kansas State Wildcats come to Dan Law Field for a three-game Big 12 series. Texas Tech and Kansas State begin the series at 6:30 p.m. on Friday and will play again at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The series finale is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are available for the series and can be purchased through the Texas Tech Athletic Ticket Office at 1-888-GO-BIG 12.
Texas Tech (21-12; 3-5) enters the weekend on a three-game win streak as the Red Raiders took the final two games of the series with No. 12 Nebraska and defeated West Texas A&M 16-1 on Tuesday night. The Red Raiders picked up a crucial Big 12 series win in Lincoln over Easter Weekend as the Red Raiders rebounded from a 3-1 loss on Friday to win 10-7 on Saturday and 10-3 on Sunday. The series win was Tech's first over Nebraska since 1997 and was Tech's first Big 12 series win in 10 tries.
Kansas State enters the weekend with an overall record of 21-13 as they defeated Newman College on Wednesday night in Manhattan. The Wildcats are 2-7 in the Big 12 after suffering a three-game sweep at the hands of No. 1 Texas over the weekend. Kansas State suffered a series sweep to Nebraska two weeks ago but picked up two wins over Missouri in its Big 12 opener March 26-28 in Columbia, Mo. The Wildcats are coached by Brad Hill who is in his first season at Kansas State.
All three games of the weekend series will be carried live by the Red Raider Baseball Radio Network. Mark Finkner (Play by Play) and Jason Totman (Color) will call all the action from Dan Law Field. Saturday's game will be televised locally by the Red Raider Sports Television Network (UPN Channel 6 on Cox Cable).
The Tech-Kansas State Series
The all-time Texas Tech-Kansas State series began in the early nineties as Texas Tech took a 3-2 decision back on March 15, 1993 at the Johnny Quick Classic in Fresno, Calif. Tech won the first seven games in the series before KSU earned its first win on April 24, 1999. The Red Raiders own the all-time series 16-7 but the Wildcats have been making up some ground lately as KSU is 6-3 against Tech in the last nine games and have won the last two Big 12 series.
A Look At Kansas State
The Kansas State Wildcats will bring a 21-13 overall record and 2-7 mark in Big 12 play to Dan Law Field this weekend for a three-game series against Texas Tech. Kansas State snapped a three-game losing skid on Wednesday night as the Wildcats rallied for an 11-9 win over Newman College. Kansas State is 2-7 in the Big 12 with a series win over Missouri but have been swept by Nebraska and Texas. The Wildcats and Longhorns set a new Big 12 record last Friday night as the two teams played 20 innings before Texas finally won the game 10-6.
The Wildcats enter the weekend series with a league low .267 team batting average. The leading hitter for Kansas State is right fielder Steve Murphy who has a .351 average along with nine doubles, three home runs and a team-high 31 RBI.
On the hill, Kansas State has a staff ERA of 4.50 as they have allowed 160 earned runs in 320 innings of work. The three weekend starters for KSU have been very effective and lead all hurlers on the team. Carlos Torres (Saturday starter) has a 3.75 ERA in 10 appearances (nine starts) and also leads the squad with 48 strikeouts. Opponents are hitting just .264 against Wildcat hurlers and the squad has a total of 11 saves. Matt Peterson has been the closer as he totals a 2.21 ERA through 20 1/3 and has a team-high five saves.
Josh Brady picked up his second Big 12 POW honor of the season. |
Brady Earns Big 12 Player Of The Week
Texas Tech junior first baseman Josh Brady has been named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Player of the Week after turning in a stellar performance this past week against Howard Payne and No. 12 Nebraska.
Brady drove in eight runs with five hits, including a double, triple and homer as the Red Raiders became the first Big 12 team to win a weekend series against Nebraska at Hawks Field in Lincoln. He was 8-for-19 (.421) for the 3-1 week at Tech with a pair of home runs and nine RBI and helped the squad roll up 36 runs in the four contests. Texas Tech downed the Huskers 10-7 and 10-3 in the final two games to become the first team to capture a Big 12 series at NU since Missouri in 2001.
Nebraska Recap
- Texas Tech's 10-3 win over Nebraska gave the Red Raiders the series win 2-1 as Tech evened the series on Saturday (10-7 win). The win snaps a string of nine consecutive Big 12 series losses that dates back to the 2003 season.
- Tech's 2-1 series win marks the first over Nebraska since the 1997 season when the Red Raiders won the regular-season championship.
- Tech's series win at Nebraska was the Huskers first home Big 12 series loss since Missouri defeated the Huskers 2-1 in March of 2001. Texas Tech also became the first Big 12 team to win a three-game series at the Huskers new home, Haymarket Park (opened in 2002).
Tech Adds Game With ACU
Texas Tech has added a game with Abilene Christian on Tuesday, April 20 and the two teams will square off at 6:30 p.m. at Dan Law Field. The game has been added due to a cancellation by the New Mexico Athletic Department of the Tech-UNM game that was scheduled to take place in Albuquerque that same day. The Lobos over scheduled during the 2003 season and the NCAA issued a four-game punishment, meaning that New Mexico could only schedule 52 games in 2004. The Lobos again over scheduled this season and thus the game has been cancelled. Texas Tech will, however, face New Mexico both times this season at Dan Law Field on April 27 and May 4.
For information on tickets to this game, please call the Texas Tech Ticket Office at 742-TECH.
Roberson Joins Tech Coaching Staff
Former Red Raider hurler Brandon Roberson has joined the team and will serve as the volunteer assistant coach. Roberson, a First-Team All Big 12 selection in 2001, was recently released by the Houston Astros organization and will be in the dugout this weekend for the Kansas State series.
He replaces Joe Dillon who left the team back in March after signing a professional contract with the Florida Marlins. Dillon is currently playing for Double-AA Carolina where he leads the team with a .583 batting average and has five doubles, four home runs and 11 RBI.
Briefly
- Friday night's game against Kansas State will be "Turn Back The Clock Night" for the Red Raiders as Tech will wear replica uniforms from its first season back in 1926. Discounted concession prices and special music will help highlight the evening.
- Texas Tech will be giving away two all-session tickets and hotel accommodations for the upcoming Big 12 Conference Baseball Tournament at The Ballpark In Arlington May 26-30. Fans must be in attendance in order to win.
- Texas Tech made a significant jump in this week's unofficial RPI rankings (Boydsworld.com) as Tech improved to No. 35. Tech was ranked 49th last week but two wins over Nebraska helped the Red Raiders jump up in the rankings.
- Josh Brady became just the third player since the 2000 season to register more than 10 home runs in a single season. Nick Blankenship and Gera Alvarez both hit over 10 in the 2002 season with 14 and 13 respectively. Brady has 12 on the year and is tied for second in the Big 12.
- Dallas Braden became the first player in the Larry Hays era at Tech to start a game on the mound and also bat in the lineup (against Nebraska - Sat. April 10). The last player to do this was Johnny Vidales back in 1986 under then head coach Gary Ashby. Braden has quickly taken over the DH spot as he is batting .414 (12-of-29) in eight games. He has two doubles, one triple and six RBI.
