LUBBOCK, Texas - Carlos Francis learned early Sunday where he would begin his professional football career as the Oakland Raiders selected the Red Raider wide receiver early in the fourth round of the 2004 NFL Draft. Francis is the first Texas Tech player taken this year.
Francis, the first receiver from Texas Tech selected in the draft since Lloyd Hill in 1994, had a stellar career at Texas Tech and became one of the most prolific receivers in school history. He amassed 216 receptions, 3,027 yards and 21 touchdowns over his career. He also set school records in Single-Game Receiving Yards by a Freshman (234 vs. Utah State, 2000), Single-Game Receptions by a Sophomore (11 vs. Nebraska, 2001) and Single-Season Receiving Yards by a Senior (1,177 in 2003).
Francis and the Tech receiving corps became the first in NCAA history to have five players record 70 or more receptions in a season. Additionally, Francis finished his career ranked among Tech's best in career receptions (2nd), career yardage (3rd) and career receiving touchdowns (t2nd).
The fourth-round selection is the highest for a Texas Tech player since Kevin Curtis went in the fourth round to the San Francisco 49ers in the 2002 draft. Current Indianapolis Colts defensive end Montae Reagor was the last player to be taken higher than the fourth round when Denver selected him in the second in 1999.
