LUBBOCK, Texas - On-field preparations for the 2004 season began Wednesday evening as the Texas Tech Red Raider held their first workout of the preseason. The session was used as an opportunity to orientate the newcomers to the offensive and defensive schemes, while the veterans continued where they left off in the spring. The team spent the initial eight-period workout in shorts, jerseys and helmets and won't don shoulder pads until Friday. The first full pad workout is scheduled for Sunday afternoon. Head coach Mike Leach was pleased with the opening practice and singled out the players' physical conditions as one of the strong points heading into the season. "We are further along than we have been in the past," Leach said. "Most of the guys stayed here over the summer and worked out and are in better shape. I feel like the new guys came into practice in pretty good shape as well. "I thought today was a pretty good first practice," Leach added. "We'll go in tomorrow and watch film with the players and continue to get them oriented." Leach wasn't the only one satisfied with the first workout. Veteran receiver Nehemiah Glover acknowledged all three sides of the ball as having a solid first day, but cautioned there is more to learn. "I think the first practice went really well," Glover said. "The defense looked good. The offense looked good. The special teams looked good. This is only the first day of practice and we still have a lot of things to work on. We will be better tomorrow." The Red Raiders continue preseason practice Thursday at 6:30 p.m., followed by a pair of 4 p.m. workouts Friday and Saturday on the grass practice field behind the new Football Training Facility."
