Scrimmage Closes Second Week of Workouts - Texas Tech began putting the pieces together Saturday afternoon with an 80-play scrimmage during the team's workout. The first defense faced the second-team offense while the first-team offense scrimmaged against the second defense. The third-, fourth- and scout teams also scrimmaged. Senior WR Nehemiah Glover finished the afternoon with one reception for 11 yards and thinks the team is "better at this point than we were last year." "I think the scrimmage went well both offensively and defensively and everyone is ready to prepare for SMU," Glover said. "Everybody was excited to finally hit and go full speed against each other. However, we can't get complacent and we have to get ready and focus on SMU everyday." Junior QB Cody Hodges looked strong working with the second-team offense, completing 16-of-18 passes for 231 yards, including an 85-yard touchdown pass over the secondary to true freshman WR Danny Amendola. Senior QB Sonny Cumbie threw for 115 yards and two touchdowns on 12-of-15 passing. Cumbie's first score was a fade to IR Cody Fuller in the right side of the end zone, while the second went 24 yards up the middle to Johnnie Mack. Amendola led all receivers with 94 yards on two receptions, while senior IR Joey Hawkins totaled 59 yards on four receptions. Sophomore WR Brandon Douglas turned two receptions into 55-yard gains. Redshirt freshman RB Taurance Rawls led the ground game with 33 yards on nine carries and true freshman RB Marcus Bunton had 33 yards on three carries, including one for a touchdown. Junior RB Taurean Henderson had three carries for 13 yards, while senior RB Johnnie Mack logged 10 yards on two carries. Junior college transfer FS Dwayne Slay registered six tackles as did sophomore SS Chad Johnson. Redshirt freshman DE Tyler Yenzer collected two sacks in third-team scrimmaging. The Red Raiders will hold their final open workout of preseason camp Sunday at 8 p.m. before closing practices for the season. Fan Appreciation - The Red Raiders thanked their fans Saturday night with the team's annual Autograph/Fan Day on the turf of Jones SBC Stadium. Texas Tech faithful were able to get a close up of their favorite players and get autographs and have pictures taken with members of the team. "It's great with all the fans coming out here showing us great support," sophomore DE Seth Nitschmann said. "It means a lot to us. It's fun to see all these little kids come out here and have a good time getting our autographs. It's a great feeling." The Texas Tech soccer and volleyball teams also were on hand signing autographs. Game Week Schedule Begins Sunday Night - Texas Tech will move into game week mode with an 8 p.m. practice Sunday. This is the traditional time of the Sunday workout during the season and will be followed by an off day on Monday. The team will workout at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and at 11 a.m. Friday. Saturday's practice will begin at 3:30 p.m. and will be followed by the team's annual Watermelon Feed.
