Lubbock, Texas - The Texas Tech volleyball team (9-7, Big 12 3-4) will face the number one team in the nation on Wed., Oct. 12, at 7 p.m., as they face the Nebraska Cornhuskers, at the Nebraska Coliseum, in Lincoln, Neb.
Last time out, the Red Raiders edged the Colorado Buffaloes (6-7, Big 12 2-6), 3-2, at the United Spirit Arena. The Red Raiders took the match by game scores of 30-28, 30-25, 19-30, 26-30 and 16-14.
The win marks Tech's third-ever victory over the Buffaloes and the first since Nov. 2, 2002. This is also the first time the Red Raiders have ever topped the Black and Gold in Lubbock.
The Red and Black had three players in double-digit kills (Philister Sang, 24; Brianna Florus, 13; Amy Charlebois, 13) and three players who posted a .500 hitting percentage (Kattie Turner, Brianna Florus and Michelle Flores).
Senior Desiree Batista recorded her 600th career dig tonight. Her career mark now stands at 605. Sang notched her ninth 15-kill match of the season. She pounded down 24 in the win. Emily Ziegler tallied her 12th 20-assist match of 2005 campaign with her 45 sets, a new season match-high.
The Huskers are currently enjoying an undefeated season (15-0, Big 12 7-0), sitting at the top of the national charts. Their top 25 victories have been at the hands of No. 4 Hawai'i, No. 3 Stanford, No. 12 Ohio State, No. 5 Minnesota, No. 4 Penn State, No. 20 Texas A&M and No. 7 Missouri.
Nebraska is currently sitting at the top of the Big 12 and is picked to finish the season in the same spot after winning the conference title during the 2004 campaign.
Husker senior middle blocker Melissa Elmer was chosen as this week's Big 12 Player of the Week. Elmer averaged 5.00 points, 3.50 kills, and 2.75 blocks while hitting .500 in road victories at No. 7 Missouri and Kansas last week as top-ranked Nebraska took over sole possession of the Big 12 race.
Tech has only defeated the Huskers once, on Oct. 26, 1996, in Lubbock, Texas. Nebraska has tallied 22 wins (17 consecutive) over the Red and Black.
First serve is slated for 7 p.m. Live stats can be found at www.huskers.com.
