LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech is bringing back the "Night of Champions" for a second year after a successful inaugural event drew a strong crowd in 2004. The event is scheduled for Mon., March 7, at 7 p.m. CT at the Athletic Training Center (ATC) south of Jones SBC Stadium.
"Night of Champions" is the pinnacle of the program's eight-week winter strength and conditioning program. Fans will have the opportunity to witness first-hand some of the activities that take place during a typical off-season for Red Raider football student-athletes.
"The event was a success last year and we hope to continue it in the coming years," football strength coach Bennie Wylie said. "We accomplished some team goals and personal bests during last year's event, while at the same time provided a unique look into the football program for the fans."
The main events are broken into the three categories: bench press, squat and clean. The top lifters in each event will participate, while the remainder of the team will demonstrate other off-season training methods.
Admission for the event is $2 for kids 12 and under and $3 for adults. Tech students can enter free of charge with a Tech student I.D. Proceeds will be applied toward the purchase of new equipment for the players. Fans are asked to enter the ATC on the upper level.
There will be several giveaways, and an autograph session will follow the event on the main floor of the ATC. Additionally, a silent auction, featuring "Strength Coach for a Day" and autographed memorabilia from former Red Raider greats such as B.J. Symons, Wes Welker, Kliff Kingsbury, Kevin Curtis, Ryan Aycock and Mike Smith, will take place. Free parking will be available in the lot on the west side of Jones SBC Stadium. The Red Raiders officially begin preparations for the 2005 season with spring drills March 23. The annual Red-Black Game is scheduled for Sat., April 16, at 11 a.m. at Jones SBC Stadium.
