Allen, Texas - Red Raider soccer competed in the Sting Classic on Saturday. The tournament is a showcase of some of the top collegiate and amateur soccer teams in the nation.
In a game where strong winds made for difficult playing conditions the Red Raiders dominated much of the play. Tech's ground passing game was rarely affected by the gusts. In the first half, with the wind at their backs, freshman Priscilla Esquivel started the scoring with a goal coming off a penalty kick. The penalty kick was awarded after relentless pressure from the Tech front three. Esquivel led the Red Raiders in scoring during the 2004 season with seven goals and one assist and she started all 19 games.
Starting the second half against the wind, Tech was able to create several clear-cut opportunities. Kimmie Davis, a transfer from BYU, continued the attack with Tech's second goal of the game. Davis, taking a perfect pass from the wing, went on a breakaway and took on the Falcons' goalie one-on-one. Davis craftily maneuvered to shoot the ball into the bottom right hand corner.
Freshman Tina Rincon was in net for Tech as she shut down the Falcons' scoring. Rincon tallied five saves in her 90 minutes of play. Rincon tallied 35 saves during the 2004 season as she started five of Tech's matches.
"I am obviously pleased with the win, but more importantly I am pleased with the manner in which we won. We have been implementing many new ideas and the players executed our ideas well. We have more to do and learn, and the players seem excited about this prospect."
Tech will return to the pitch for more spring soccer on April 23 at 11 a.m. as they take on the Dallas D'Feeters.
