WACO, Texas - Baylor broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the seventh with five runs and held on for a 6-1 win over Texas Tech on Friday night in this Big 12 series opener at Baylor Ballpark.
The loss drops Texas Tech to 27-15 overall and to 7-10 in Big 12 play. Tech remains tied for sixth place in the league standings with Oklahoma thanks to an 8-1 loss by the Sooners earlier this evening at home against Nebraska. Baylor improves to 29-16 overall and maintains its Big 12 lead as the Bears now stand at 14-5 in league play.
Baylor was the first to scratch in this dual between starting pitcher's Billy Carnline (Tech) and Trey Taylor. The Bears got a two-out base hit from catcher Zach Dillon and Reid Brees then drew a walk and that moved Dillon into scoring position. Third baseman Kevin Russo laced a single through the left side and Tech left fielder Brian Capps made a great throw home but catcher Cooper Fouts was unable to make a play.
Tech evened the score in the top of the seventh off of Baylor reliever Ryan LaMotta. Senior centerfielder Cody Fuller laced a double down the left field line with two outs and that allowed Cooper Fouts to score all the way from first. Fouts kept Tech alive in the inning with a two-out single up the middle.
Baylor regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh as the Bears loaded the bases with no outs and Carnline walked home Paul Witt. Josh Ford gave Baylor a 4-1 lead as he deposited the first pitch he got from reliever Adam Fry into right field for a two-RBI double. The Baylor lead grew to 6-1 as left fielder Reid Brees cleared the bases with a two-RBI single to right-center.
Billy Carnline (5-2) was charged with the loss for the Red Raiders after giving up five earned runs on four walks and five hits in six innings of work. Ryan LaMotta (5-0) picked up the win in relief for Baylor as he pitched the final three innings allowing one run on four hits.
Texas Tech and Baylor will continue this three-game series on Saturday afternoon with a 2 p.m. first pitch at Baylor Ballpark. The game will be televised nationally on Fox Sports Net.
