Red Raiders Drop Angelo State 11-6

LUBBOCK, Texas - Junior right-hander Billy Carnline pitched 4 2/3 innings of shutout relief while Carey Avants and Matt Smith added three RBI each to lead Texas Tech to an 11-6 win over Angelo State on Wednesday afternoon.
Texas Tech (20-10) rallied from an early 1-0 deficit by scoring four runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Red Raiders picked up a couple of run-scoring doubles in the inning, including a two-RBI double by freshman Matt Smith.
Angelo State (18-17) tied the game with a three-run outburst in the top of the third off Tech reliever Fielding Lewis. Tech was able to answer the Ram scoring with two runs of its own in the bottom of the third and never relinquished the lead.
Smith picked up his third RBI of the game in the seventh when he belted a solo home run over the monster in center field. The home run was his first of the season and he finished the day 2-for-3 with three RBI.
Junior right-hander Billy Carnline (5-1) earned the win in relief for Tech as he allowed just one hit in 4 2/3 shutout innings while striking out six. Jason Schniers (0-1) was charged with the loss for Angelo State after giving up three earned runs on three hits in three innings of work.
Texas Tech returns to Big 12 action this weekend as the Red Raiders host the Oklahoma State Cowboys in a three-game series at Dan Law Field.
