Texas Relays Awaits Red Raider Track and Field

LUBBOCK, Texas - The 78th annual Texas Relays begins today in Austin. Hosted by the University of Texas, the four-day long event will be held at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
The men's sprint medley relay (200M, 200M, 400M, 800M) is looking for its fourth consecutive crown at this year's event. The team began its reign during the 2002 season and captured its' third title at last year's meet. The third-consecutive title was the second time in Texas Relays history that a relay has won three consecutive titles.
Julianne Kennedy (heptathlon) and Jamie Robinson (decathlon) will be the first Red Raiders to begin competition today. The multi-events are scheduled to be begin at 12 p.m. Kennedy finished in eighth-place at the Big 12 indoor meet, earning all-conference honors. Robinson, a transfer from South Plains, was the 2004 NJCAA nation champion in the decathlon.
Competing on Thursday will be the multi-events, Olivia Clardy, Mark Medley, Chris Ashcraft, Seth Harris, Terry Beard, Shawon Harris, Derron Herah and Bryan Scott. Clardy and Medley will be competing in their respective hammer throws while Ashcraft and Se. Harris will be competing in the section B pole vault. Beard, Sh. Harris, Herah and Scott will be running in the prelims of the 400M hurdles. Scott is the defending Big 12 champion in the event and Beard is the 2004 NJCAA nation champion in the 400M hurdles.
The events continue on Friday with the prelims of the men's 4x100M relay and the women's 4x400M. In the individual events, Sh. Harris and Marlon Odom will compete in the prelims of the 110M hurdles and indoor all-conference performer Earvin Parker will run in the 100M dash prelims.
In Friday morning's session of the field events will be Jeremy Busby, Bobby Evers, Tori Polk and Geralda Dukuly in the long jump, Misty Coley and Kennedy in the section B of the high jump and Krista Grantham, Dana Rosenbladt and Lindsey Walesheck in the B section of the pole vault.
The afternoon session will consist of 2004 indoor Big 12 champion Lacy Wilson in the A section of the high jump and Corey Dowden, Evers, and Dukuly in the triple jump. In the throwing events, Brad Kring will be competing in the discus.
In the Friday night running session, Kyle Atwood and Kevin Chelimo will be running the 1500M and Benson Cheserek and Haron Lagat will participate in the 3000M steeplechase. Stefanie Calhoun will be competing in the women's steeplechase. The men's and women's sprint medley relays will also be running.
Saturday's competition will begin with Kelley Schulz in section A of the pole vault. Chad Pharis will be in the A section of the high jump, Harrison Benjamin and Kring will be throwing the shot put and Bobby Most and Jared Thornhill will be competing in the section A of the pole vault.
The finals of the running events will begin at 12:15 p.m. on Saturday. In the midst of the finals, two-time All-American Tyree Gailes will be competing in the invitational 100M and the men's 4x400M relay will also be competing in the invitational section. Also on Saturday, in the women's distance events, Bridget Tidwell and Brionne Yosten will be competing in the 1500M.
Coming into this week's meet, the men's squad is ranked 19th. Individually, Jonathan Johnson is ranked no. 1 in the 800M, Tyree Gailes is sixth in the 100M, and the 4x400M is seventh on the list. For the women, Shereefa Lloyd is 10th in the 200M, Licretia Sibley is 12 in the 400M and the 4x400M relay is ranked 12th.
