Austin, Texas - In day three of competition at the 78th annual Texas Relays, the Red Raiders posted five regional qualifying marks, earned three titles, ran a collegiate-best time and the men's sprint medley relay won their fourth-consecutive title.
The men's sprint medley relay, Michael Mathieu, Tyree Gailes, Andrae Williams and Jonathan Johnson, did what no other team has done in Texas Relays history. They won Tech's fourth-consecutive sprint medley relay title with their school record time of 3:13.06. Johnson has been the anchor leg (800M) through out the squad's reign.
The women's sprint medley relay, JaToya Moore, Shereefa Lloyd, Licretia Sibley and Althea Chambers, won its first title in the event, clocking a time of 3:48.44, also a school record. With the men's and the women's sprint medley relays both capturing titles, Texas Tech has set a new Texas Relays record as no other college or university has captured both titles in the same year.
The men's 4x100M relay, comprised of Johnny Jacob, Tyree Gailes, Matt Stewart and Earvin Parker, clocked a regional qualifying time of 40.30. The women's 4x400M relay, comprised of Louise Cox, Shereefa Lloyd, Tori Polk and Licretia Sibley, clocked a time of 3:32.47, the fastest collegiate time run this season. The group finished first overall and will compete in the finals of the event on Saturday.
Tech had another successful day in the hurdles as Marlon Odom and Shawon Harris clocked regional qualifying times of 14.00 and 14.24, respectively. Odom's time was also good enough to qualify him for the finals in the event. Harris qualified for the finals of the 400M hurdles. All finals of the running events will be held on Saturday.
In the shot put, Harrison Benjamin finished second overall in the B group with a 56'-1.25, a regional qualifying mark.
In the high jump, 2005 Big 12 Indoor Champion Lacy Wilson was crowned Texas Relays champion this afternoon. Wilson jumped a career-best 5'-11.25" and finished first amongst the 13 competitors.
In the 1500M, Kevin Chelimo ran for a second-place finish with his regional qualifying time of 3:48.00. Chelimo is currently leading the nation in the event with his time of 3:46.15, clocked at the UTEP Invite last weekend. Kyle Atwood finished in sixth-place with his career-best time of 3:52.22.
In the 3000M steeplechase, Stefanie Calhoun finished in fourth place with a career-best and new school record time of 10:40.82, a regional qualifying time. For the men, Haron Lagat clocked a regional qualifying time of 9:01.96 while fellow countryman Benson Cheserek ran a 9:08.28 to finish in eighth place, narrowly missing qualifying for the regional meet.
