LUBBOCK, Texas - The No.29 Texas Tech men's golf team fell victim to strong winds in Tempe, Ariz., at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational where the Red Raiders finished in ninth-place. Tech began the third round just four strokes out of the top four, but was unable to close the gap even behind sophomore Oscar Floren's tied for 18th individual finish.
Floren (70-71-76) led all Raiders with a tournament score of 217, followed by junior Andrew Dresser (72-71-77-220) who ended his performance with a tie for 27th-place finish.
Rounding out the Tech competitors were junior Tyler Symons (75-71-75-221, t32nd), junior Nicolas Allain (72-77-74-224, t37th) and junior Derek Smith (74-76-76-226, t51st).
Tech, who was on track to tie its best finish at the ASU Thunderbird, were unable to overcome the highly ranked field to finish in the top five. Tech's best finish at the Thunderbird was a seventh-place finish in 2003.
Leading the overall tournament-team leaderboard was first-time champion of the Thunderbird No.1 UNLV (274-289-296-859) in first. Following the title holder was No.44 Pepperdine (295-284-292-861) in second with host, and former defending champion of the Thunderbird, No.15 Arizona State (286-287-296-869) in third. Closing out the top five were No. 17 Arizona (282-292-297-871) in fourth and No.11 UCLA (290-289-294-873) in fifth.
The 54-hole event concluded after two days of competition which began on April 8 and wrapped up on April 9.
The Red Raiders will return to the greens April 16-17 to compete at the Aggie Invitational in College Station, Texas.
