Men's Golf off to a Strong Start at Thunderbird

The No.29 Texas Tech men's golf team sits in seventh after two rounds at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational in Phoenix, Ariz. The Red Raiders currently sit in front of No. 11 UCLA and are just four strokes out of the top five overall.
Leading the Red Raiders, through two, is sophomore Oscar Floren who is tied for sixth with a day-one score of 141, one-under par. Junior Andrew Dresser currently rounds out the Raiders in the top 25 with a tied for 19th-place finish after the second round. Dresser, who carded a one-over par performance, enters the third and final round tomorrow with a 143 two-round score.
Rounding out the Red and Black are junior Tyler Symons (75-71-146) and junior Nicolas Allain (72-77-149) who carded a tied for 33rd- and 52nd-place finish, respectively. Making his first appearance for the Red Raiders is junior college transfer Derek Smith who currently sits in a tie for 58th. Smith joined the Raiders during the semester break after playing one semester at Wichiat State where he averaged just above a 72.
Tech is on track to tie its best finish at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational of seventh, a mark it posted in 2003 amongst a field of 16 teams.
Leading the 2005 15-team field is No.2 UNLV (274-289-563), in first, followed by No. 44 Pepperdine (285-284-569, second), No.15 ASU (286-287-573) in third. Closing out the top five are No.17 Arizona (282-292-574) and No.67 Colorado State (285-289-574) tied for fourth.
The 54-hole event continues with tee times to begin at 9 a.m. The final 18 holes will be played out tomorrow, with competition projected to end around 5 p.m.
Competition will be at the ASU Karsten Golf Course (Par 72, 7, 037 yards), with results available on Tech's website, www.texastech.com following the conclusion of the tournament on Saturday.
