LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech junior Erin Grant was named a third team 2005 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar, which was released in the April issue of the Black Issues in Higher Education.
Black Issues in Higher Education established the Sports Scholars Awards to honor undergraduate students of color who have made achieving both academically and athletically a winning combination.
The awards are named after tennis legend Arthur Ashe because of his commitment to education and for his love of the game of tennis. Student-athletes are nominated not only for their outstanding performances in sports, but also for their academic excellence and community activism.
Nominees have to compete in an intercollegiate sport, maintain a cumulative grade-point average of at least a 3.2 and be active on their campuses or in their communities.
Grant, who hails from Arlington, Texas, owns a 3.39 GPA with a double major in marketing and general business. She will graduate this May 14th in just three years at Texas Tech. Grant is a two-time first team Academic All-Big 12 selection.
A first team All-Big 12 selection, Grant became Texas Tech's all-time career leader in assists (661) and set the junior class record for assists in a season (218). She averaged 8.2 points and 7.0 assists per game for the Lady Raiders. Grant was also a finalist for the Nancy Lieberman Award, which is presented annually to the nation's top point guard. Grant was selected the team's Most Valuable Player in 2004 and 2005, which was voted on by her teammates.
Grant is also active in the community as she visits local hospitals, is a frequent speaker at area schools and participates annually in Lubbock's Race for the Cure.
