Lady Raiders Down Australian Junior National Team, 81-73

SUTHERLAND, NSW, Australia - The Texas Tech women's basketball team opened up its Australian tour with an 81-73 victory over the Australian Junior National Team in Sutherland, Australia. The Lady Raiders played their first of two games in the Sydney area and their first of five games while on their Australia tour.
Tech got off to a slow start being down 23-22 after the first quarter but gained momentum during the second quarter. The Lady Raiders went in at halftime with a 43-37 lead against an aggressive, physical and scrappy Australian team.
In the second half, Tech took a 62-49 lead after the third quarter before the Gems cut the margin to 67-63 with 4:30 remaining in the game. The Gems then got within two points at 67-65 with just over four minutes to go. The Lady Raiders made some crucial defensive stops and scored some key baskets to claim an 81-73 win, despite having two starters (LaToya Davis and Erin Myrick) on the bench after fouling out.
Davis and Alesha Robertson both put up double-doubles for the Lady Raiders as Davis finished with 18 points and 13 rebounds, while Robertson also had 18 points and chipped in 10 boards. Also scoring in double figures were Chesley Dabbs and Erin Grant with 14 points apiece. Grant dished out seven assists, while Davis added two blocks. Davis, Robertson and Dabbs all tallied three steals each.
For the game, Tech shot 40.3 percent from the field (29-for-72), 23.5 percent from behind the three-point line (4-for-17) and 76 percent from the free throw line (19-for-25). The Gems were 48.1 percent from the field (25-for-52), 35.7 percent from three-point range (5-for-14) and 64.3 percent from the charity stripe (18-for-28).
Tech will play the Australian Junior National Team again on Sun., June 26, at 4 p.m. local time.
