LUBBOCK, Texas - Former Texas Tech women's basketball standout Sheryl Swoopes earned her first WNBA All-Star Most Valuable Player award last Saturday in the sixth WNBA All-Star game held in Uncasville, Conn.
Behind Swoopes, the West beat the East 122-99 in the highest scoring All-Star game in WNBA history. The West improved its record to 6-0. Swoopes was again the top-vote getter in balloting among the All-Stars.
Swoopes, who plays for the Houston Comets, had 15 points with most of them coming in the first half (11 points). It marked the fifth All-Star game for Swoopes, but just her first MVP honor.
Through the first 15 games of the season, Swoopes is averaging a team-high 18 points, four assists, three rebounds and two steals for Houston. The Comets post a 10-5 record and currently stand in second in the Western Conference division.
Swoopes and the Comets return to action on Tues., July 12, at 7 p.m. CDT, against the New York Liberty on ESPN2.
