LUBBOCK, Texas - Running back Taurean Henderson (Gatesville, Texas) and wide receiver Jarrett Hicks (Houston, Texas) were named to the All-Big 12 Preseason Media Football Team on Saturday in a vote by the league's media members. Punt returner Danny Amendola (The Woodlands, Texas) also was named to the team.
Arguably the most versatile back in the league, Henderson became the first player in Big 12 Conference history last season to reach 2,000 career rushing and 1,500 career receiving yards. He set the Tech scoring record for a junior with 108 points last season and currently is in second place on the Tech career receptions list with 236, trailing leader Wes Welker by 23. Henderson also trails Tech all-time scoring leader James Gray by 30 points. Henderson is one of two running backs named to the All-Big 12 team (Peterson, OU).
Hicks set the Tech single-season touchdown receptions record last season with 13, eclipsing Lloyd Hill's 12-year-old mark of 12. One of the top receivers in the nation, Hicks enters the 2005 season on several preseason All-America squads. He returns as the nation's seventh-leading receiver in touchdowns from 2004 and is ranked ninth among returning receivers with 1,177. His yardage total last season set a Tech sophomore record.
Amendola completed his true freshman season a year ago as the league's top punt return man with 379 yards and a touchdown on 29 returns. Additionally, he averaged 12.8 yards per return, the most for a Tech freshman since former Tech All-American Tyrone Thurman's 13.5 in 1985. Amendola's numbers also were better than those of former Red Raider and NCAA punt return record holder Wes Welker during his freshman season.
