LUBBOCK, Texas - With the beginning of the 2005 season rapidly approaching, coaches and players on the Texas Tech women's soccer team continue to work hard in practices and will take the field in an exhibition match against West Texas A&M on Saturday, Aug. 20.
The Red Raiders are led this season by first-year head coach Neil McGuire, who comes to Lubbock after serving as the head coach of Mississippi State from 2000-2003 and as an assistant coach at Texas during the 2004 season. Jamie Crum enters her fourth season as an assistant coach on the Tech sideline and is joined this season by Brian Zwaschka and volunteer assistant coach Kelly Schmedes.
On the field, Tech returns 15 letterwinners and 10 starters from a season ago, including forward Priscilla Esquivel, who paced the team with seven goals and 15 points in 2004. The team features five seniors and four juniors, who will be counted on to anchor the young team. Senior midfielder Karen Stephens enters the campaign with a streak of 53 consecutive starts, while seniors Megan Knauss and Beth Lippert will compete with sophomore Tina Rincon for playing time in goal. Fellow seniors Kimmie Davis and Kim Warren are expected to help lead the team offensively.
Texas Tech opens the season on Aug. 26 in Ft. Worth, Texas, as they battle the TCU Horned Frogs, before returning to Lubbock on Aug. 28 to face SMU in its season opener. The Red Raiders open Big 12 play on Sept. 23 when they host the Iowa State Cyclones at R.P. Fuller Stadium.
