LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to visiting Big Ten opponent Minnesota on Sunday in front of 359 fans at R.P. Fuller Stadium.
The first half was a tightly contested one, with a combined 16 fouls in the period, including 13 by Minnesota. The Red Raiders held a 7-3 shot advantage in the frame, but neither team was able to net a goal, send the match to halftime scoreless.
The Golden Gophers (2-1-1) took the game's first lead at the 52:42 mark of the second half when Ashley Seeler emerged from a scramble in front of the Texas Tech net and was able to slip a low shot by Red Raider goalie Beth Lippert.
Lippert made four saves in the match, which was her second start in goal for Tech this season.
Jamie Cheever put Minnesota up 2-0 in the 66th minute as she drove in and maneuvered past a diving Lippert to tally her first goal of the season.
Freshman Chessa Purser was able to create some offense for the Red Raiders as she took a game-high six shots.
"I thought we played very well," said Texas Tech Head Coach Neil McGuire. "We let down a little after the first goal was scored and that's the time we need to push. Our team can compete at this level; they just need to believe they can."
The Red Raiders are back in action next weekend when they travel to Tulsa, Okla., for a pair of matches. On Friday, the team will take on Oral Roberts at 7 p.m. and is back in action on Sunday against Tulsa at 2:30 p.m.
