TEXAS TECH LOOKS TO SNAP LOSING SKID AT NEW MEXICO ON TUESDAY
The Texas Tech Red Raiders will be looking to break a three-game losing skid on Tuesday afternoon when they face the New Mexico Lobos at Isotopes Park in Albuquerque. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. (CT) and tickets are available for purchase by calling the New Mexico Athletics Ticket Office at (505) 925-5626.
The Red Raiders enter Tuesday's game on the heels of a three-game losing streak after dropping three games this past weekend at the Houston College Classic at Minute Maid Park. The Houston College Classic is regarded as one of the top preseason baseball tournaments and this year was no exception. The Tech offense entered the weekend boasting a .420 team average but after facing some of the top pitchers in the land, the Red Raiders were held to a .192 clip (19-of-99).
There were some positives for the Red Raiders over the weekend and that came in the starting pitching. Tech starters Josh Tomlin, Miles Morgan and Aaron Odom combined for 16 1/3 innings and 16 strikeouts while allowing just five walks. Both Morgan and Odom topped their season-high strikeout totals as Morgan struckout nine Tulane batters while Odom struckout five in Sunday's game against Houston.
Offensively, senior center fielder Brian Capps paced the team with a .364 average while junior designated hitter Tyler Reves led the way with four RBI and two home runs. The Red Raiders are still in search of their first error free game of the season as Tech committed five errors over three games for a .957 fielding percentage.
Following Tuesday's game at New Mexico, the Red Raiders will play host to the St. John's Red Storm in a three-game series at Dan Law Field (Feb. 17-19).
NOTING THE RED RAIDERS
- Junior designated hitter Tyler Reves now has three home runs on the season after adding two more to his collection over the weekend in Houston. Reves tallied a three-run dinger in Saturday's game against Tulane and helped Tech avoid a shutout to Houston on Sunday when he hit a solo shot in the top of the ninth. His efforts in Houston helped land him on the all-tournament team.
- Sophomore catcher Matt Smith is in the middle of a career-long six game hit streak. Smith's previous long hit streak was a four-game stretch last season.
- Four true freshmen made the start in Friday's game against Rice and that marked the most in Larry Hays' career at Texas Tech. Tech's entire starting outfield consisted of true freshmen Roger Kieschnick, Drew Evans and James Leverton while frosh Willie Rueda drew the nod at second base.
- Senior Brian Capps made his first career start at shortstop in Friday's game against Rice. Capps replaced Kyle Martin who was scratched just before the game due to an injury to his right index finger. Martin made his way back into Tech's lineup on Saturday and Sunday in the games against Tulane and Houston.
