- Texas Tech has now won eight-straight season openers and improves to 35-22 all-time on opening day (21-8 at home).
- Head Coach Larry Hays started three freshman in today's game marking the most in his career at Texas Tech and the largest total since the 1977 season when he was coach at Lubbock Christian. A total of six true freshman saw action in today's game.
- Freshman left fielder Roger Kieschnick's grand slam in the eighth inning was the first by a Red Raider since All-American Cameron Blair hit one against Texas last year in Austin on March 25.
- Tech's 21 runs ties the most on opening day since the Red Raiders belted out 21 against Howard back in 2001.
- Head Coach Larry Hays needs just two more wins to surpass the legendary Cliff Gustafson on the all-time NCAA career win list. Hays now has a career record of 1,426-777-3.
- Matt Smith's five RBI on the afternoon marked a career high. He previously had two games with three RBI.
