Four Lady Raiders Named Academic All-Big 12

DALLAS - The Big 12 Conference has named 38 student-athletes to the 2006 Academic All-Big 12 Women's Basketball Team, the league office announced. Texas Tech's Erin Grant, Brooke Baughman, Darrice Griffin and Erin Myrick were all named Academic All-Big 12 first team.
Grant, a native of Arlington, Texas, graduated last May with degrees in marketing and general business and is currently working on her MBA. This is Grant's third time to be named to the first team. The Canyon, Texas, native Baughman received her second first-team selection and is majoring in exercise and sport science. Griffin and Myrick are first-time recipients of the honor. Griffin, who hails from Seagraves, Texas, is majoring in psychology, while the Duarte, Calif., native Myrick is majoring in journalism.
Among those honored, Carolyn McCullough (Kansas State) was nominated with a 4.00 grade point average.
Oklahoma led the conference with seven selections to the squad -- five on the first team and two on the second.
Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the academic all-league women's basketball squad consisted of 31 first team members combined with seven on the second team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of her team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
The Phillips 66 Big 12 Women's Basketball Championship returns to Dallas for the third time in four years (2003-04, 06) on March 7-9 and 11 at Reunion Arena. Six different teams have won the nine Phillips 66 Big 12 Championships. Iowa State, Oklahoma and Texas Tech have two titles each while Baylor, Colorado and Texas have one. Defending national champ Baylor claimed its first conference tournament championship at the '05 event at Kansas City's Municipal Auditorium.
