FULLERTON, Calif. - The Texas Tech softball team dropped its second game of the 2006 Worth Invitational on Saturday, falling to tournament-host Cal-State Fullerton by a score of 2-1 at the Titan Softball Complex.
The loss drops Texas Tech's overall record this season to 5-14, while Cal-State Fullerton improves its season mark to 10-8.
The Titans were able to take the first lead of the contest in the bottom of the third inning as they took advantage of two Tech errors in the frame to go up 1-0 on an unearned run.
In bottom of the fifth inning, Cal-State Fullerton was able to push across another run to increase its lead to 2-0. With two outs, Titan right fielder Molly Perez singled in right centerfield to give Cal-State Fullerton only their fifth baserunner of the ballgame off Tech start Erin Crawford. After Perez advanced to second on a wild pitch, she was followed in the order by pitcher Candice Baker who laced a single into right field to drive in the game's second run.
The Red Raiders threatened in the top of the seventh inning, loading the bases with two outs on three consecutive walks. Pinch hitter Alex Watkins was able to drive in Tech's only run of the game in the next at bat when she was hit by a pitch, however, junior Kristen Healy could not continue the rally after Watkins, striking out to end the game.
Crawford was the hard-luck loser in the contest, dropping her record this season to 3-3. The Leander, Texas, native allowing only one eared run on six hits, while walking one and striking out one.
The Red Raider offense was unable to get things rolling in Saturday's first game. Dispite having seven baserunners in the game, only one Tech batter was able to reach by virtue of a hit. Freshman Elizabeth Eimen collected the team's only hit of the game with a bunt single in the first inning.
Texas Tech softball will resume play at the 2006 Worth Invitational at Titan Softball Complex with a 8 p.m. (CST) match up with No. 2 Tennessee. The Red Raiders will conclude play at the tournament on Sunday at 11 a.m. (CST) when they face off against the Northwestern Wildcats.
