FULLERTON, Calif. - The Texas Tech softball team was unable to capture a win in their finale at the 2006 Worth Invitational, falling to the Northwestern Wildcats, 7-0, at the Titan Softball Complex.
The loss drops the Red Raiders record this season to 5-16, while Northwestern improves to 10-6.
The Wildcats were able to jump on top early in the contest, pushing across a run in the top of the first inning for a 1-0 lead. Northwestern collected three hits in the frame off Tech starter Erin Crawford, cashing in on a RBI single off the bat of designated player Kristen Amegin.
Crawford (3-5) took the loss in the contest, giving up four runs in the contest, only one of which that was earned.
In the top of the second inning, Crawford quickly retired the first two hitters of the frame, before the Red Raider defense committed two errors behind her attempting the get of the inning unscathed. The result was three unearned runs for the Wildcats to chase Crawford and open a 4-0 advantage.
Centerfielder Sheila McCorkle gave Northwestern a 6-0 lead in the fourth inning with a two-out two-run single. In the top of the fifth, the Wildcats tallied their seventh and final run of the game.
Wildcat pitcher Courtney Foster (7-4) kept the Red Raider offense off balance for the first five innings of the game, limiting Tech to only two hits, a single by catcher Robyn Wike in the third inning and a single by first baseman Jennifer Corkin in the fifth.
Texas Tech softball is back in action next weekend as they travel to Wichita, Kan., to take part in the Wichita State Invitational.
