LUBBOCK, Texas - After three straight series against Big 12, the Texas Tech softball team will take a break from league play this week when it travels to the Metroplex for a pair of mid-week non-conference doubleheaders. The Red Raiders will face Texas-Arlington on Wednesday at 4 p.m and 6 p.m. at Allan Saxe Field in Arlington before returning to play on Thursday against North Texas in a doubleheader with the first game beginning at 3 p.m.
Texas Tech has been a hot team of late splitting a pair of series against nationally ranked opponents before sweeping Iowa State at Rocky Johnson Field last weekend to give the team its first series sweep at home since the 2001 season. The Red Raiders enter the week in sole possession of fifth place in the Big 12 standings with an even 4-4 record.
Senior pitcher Erin Crawford was outstanding over the weekend, picking up both wins in the circle for Tech without yielding an earn run. The Leander, Texas, native helped the Red Raiders emerge victorious in the opener, tossing her second shutout of the season, a complete game two-hit effort. Crawford returned in Sunday's contest, pitching the final four innings of a 4-3 extra innings come from behind Tech win.
Freshman third baseman Brooke Neuman connected on the first home run of her young career in the contest to help the Red Raiders notch the victory. With Tech trailing 3-2 entering the bottom of the seventh, Neuman, who entered the game as a defensive replacement in the top half of the frame, slammed a pitch from ISU starter Amie Ford over the wall in left field to send the game into extra innings where right fielder Whitney Riley cemented the victory with a RBI single.
Redshirt freshman Montana Patin, who leads the team with a .467 batting average in Big 12 play, collected hits in both contests against Iowa State to extend her career-best hitting streak to seven games.
Texas-Arlington (24-12) enter Wednesday's doubleheader in second place in the Southland Conference with a 13-3 league mark this season. The Mavericks have won seven of their last eight contests. North Texas, meanwhile, enters this week with a 16-33 overall mark and a 0-3 record in the Sun Belt Conference.
Texas Tech will jump back into Big 12 play this weekend as the team travels to Lawrence, Kan., to battle the Kansas Jayhawks.
