LUBBOCK, Texas - Junior forward Kim Cypert tallied three goals and newcomer Lauren Martel notched her first goal of the spring as the Texas Tech soccer team defeated the High Plains Drifters by a score of 4-0 in an exhibition match at R.P. Fuller Stadium on Tuesday.
The Red Raiders and head coach Neil McGuire entered the game with several goals for the contest among them to be poised and maintain position, keep the ball on the floor, provide quality support on all sides of the ball and the attack with numbers.
"I felt like we played well, and will always be pleased when scoring 4 goals" said McGuire. "We did a very good job with our execution, and were successful in all four components of the plan we set heading into the match."
The Drifters, a U-17 club team from Amarillo, could not manage to get much offense off a stingy Tech defense that was led by senior Ana Morton, junior Alex Aton and sophomore Taylor Redus. Starting goalkeeper Tina Rincon was out with a hand injury, so the Red Raiders called on Beth Lippert, who completed her last season with the Red Raiders in the fall, and she obliged by notching the shutout in net for the Red Raiders.
Cypert, who tallied two goals in the fall, continued her strong spring with the three tallies in the match. The Suger Land, Texas, native will be looked upon to fill a larger role in the Texas Tech offensive attack during the upcoming campaign as she enters her junior season.
The Red Raiders are back in action on Friday night when they travel to Canyon, Texas, to battle West Texas A&M at 6:30 p.m.
