LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech committed three defensive errors and stranded nine base runners in a 9-4 loss to New Mexico State on Tuesday evening at Dan Law Field.
The loss snaps Tech's two-game win streak as the Red Raiders falls to 22-11 on the season while New Mexico State improves to 12-22.
Three defensive errors and a passed ball by Tech catcher Matt Smith ultimately led to defeat for the Red Raiders as New Mexico State plated five unearned runs on the evening.
New Mexico State jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning and never looked back as the Aggies tagged Tech starter Josh Tomlin for five runs on three hits over the first three innings of the game. A crucial fielding error by shortstop Kyle Martin allowed Brandon Lance to step to the plate with runners on second and third and he made Tech pay with a three-run homer to left field. The home run was his fifth of the season.
It looked like the game might be an offensive explosion by both clubs as Tech plated single runs in the both the first and second innings. However, the fireworks didn't get far off the ground for the Red Raiders as Tech would score just two more runs the rest of the way. Brian Capps plated the final two runs with a bases-loaded single through the right side in the bottom of the sixth.
Aggie reliever Dillon Smith pitched six stellar innings of relief to help lead New Mexico State to their first win over Tech since the 2000 season. Dillon allowed just two runs on four hits in his six innings of work. Josh Tomlin fell to 1-2 on the year in what was his first start since the game against Rice back in early February.
