
Kennedy Leads Big 12 Heptathlon

Waco, Texas - Texas Tech track and field has completed day one of competition at the 2006 Big 12 Championships. Sophomore Julianne Kennedy is currently leading the women's heptathlon with 3,271 points after day one of competition.
Kennedy started the day off strong with a third-place finish in the 100M hurdles with the second-best mark of her career, 14.50. She continued with a first-place tie in the high jump with a clearance of 5'-7.75" and a third-place finish in the shot put with a toss of 39'-6". Kennedy finished the day with a clocking of 25.73, the second-best time of her career, in the 200M. Saturday's heptathlon events include the long jump, javelin and the 800M.
On day one of the decathlon, Chad Andrews marked a time 11.50 in the 100M, the second-best mark of his career. Andrews went on to mark a leap of 22'-1.5" in the long jump, a toss of 43'-10" in the shot put (a new personal best), a clearance of 6'-1.25" in the high jump and a time of 52.45 in the 400M. Andrews is in 10th place after day one of competition.
Freshman Cale Smith is making his Big 12 Championships debut. He started the day with a personal best in the 100M with a clocking of 11.38. Smith went on to mark a leap of 20'-5" in the long jump, a toss of 40'-7" in the shot put, a clearance of 6'-3.5" in the high jump (a new personal best) and a time of 54.51 (a new personal best) in the 400M. Smith is currently in 13th place after day one of competition.
Saturday's decathlon events include the 110M hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin and 1500M.
In the 10,000M, Irene Kimaiyo earned Tech's first points of the competition with her fifth-place finish. She clocked a 35:04.07, a new personal best and good for All-Big 12 honors.
