ORLANDO, Fla. - Hoping to continue one of the greatest seasons in school history, the Texas Tech men's golf team will begin play at the East Regional of the 2006 NCAA Men's Golf Championship on Thursday. The Red Raiders are the seventh seed at the event which is being hosted by the University of Central Florida and will be played at the Lake Nona Golf Club in Orlando, Fla.
Among the teams joining Tech in the East Regional is defending national champion and top-ranked Georgia. Three regional tournaments, encompassing the current nine regions, will be conducted May 18-20 with a total of 27 teams and six individuals not on selected teams assigned to each regional site. Ten teams and two individuals not on advancing teams will move on from each regional to the championship finals, which will be conducted May 31-June 3 at Crosswater Golf Club at Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Oregon.
Texas Tech is coming off a fourth place performance at the 2006 Big 12 Men's Golf Championship, the highest finish at the event in program history. Senior Andrew Dresser was impressive at the event, firing a final round 73 to earn a tie for fourth at the event. The Carrollton, Texas, native has placed in the top ten in seven tournaments on the year and currently carries a 71.97 scoring average.
Dresser and teammate Oscar Floren have led the young team this season, with both players bringing home All-Big 12 honors. Floren, who was selected as mid-season All-America by Golf World, leads the Red Raiders with a scoring average of 71.3 and has taken Top Ten honors in eight of Tech's 11 tournaments this year.
Freshmen Jake Younan-Wise, Santiago Rivas and Brandon Lakatta will round out the Tech contingency at the event with all three players already having all contributed to the team this season and led Texas Tech as it looks to improve on a 25th place showing at the 2005 NCAA Central Regional.
