ORLANDO, Fla. - Seeking the second trip to the NCAA Championships under head coach Greg Sands, the Texas Tech men's golf team will head into Saturday's final round at the NCAA East Regional in excellent position to achieve that goal. The seventh-seeded Red Raiders will open play in the third round at the Lake Nona Golf & Country Club with sole possession of fourth place at the event after turning in a team round of 293 on Friday to give them a two-round total of 582.
The top ten teams at the event as well as two individuals not on advancing teams will move on from each regional to the championship finals, which will be conducted May 31-June 3 at Crosswater Golf Club at Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Ore. Texas Tech sits only two shots out of second place at the tournament with a six-over par tournament total and trails the nation's top-ranked, Georgia, by four strokes for the overall team lead at the event.
"It feels really good to be in the position that we are in," said Texas Tech head coach Greg Sands. "I'm really proud of our guys and how they are competing. As a coach, I think your main goal when to come to a tournament like this is to play well and advance to the next round, but it has been really nice to see our guys competitiveness; they not only want to advance but they want to win this thing."
Junior Oscar Floren maintained his impressive play at the event on Friday, improving on an opening round 71 with a second day two-under 70, a round which featured three birdies on the front nine, to head to the clubhouse in a tie for fourth place with a two round total of 141. The Ljungskile, Sweden, native is only two shots off Southern California's Taylor Wood, who leads the field with a five-under par score of 139.
Senior Andrew Dresser was Tech's biggest mover on the day, carding his second-consecutive round of 73 to jump ten spots from a tie for 27th into a tie for 17th. Freshman Jake Younan-Wise fired a second round 74, earning him a tie for 24th place with a two-day total of 147, while fellow rookie Santiago Rivas turned in a 76 to come in a tie for 33rd with a event score of 148.
Rounding out the Tech contingency at the event, freshman Brandon Lakatta followed an opening round of 74 with a 76 on Friday to turn in a tie for 57th.
