LUBBOCK, Texas - Hoping to add a National Championship to its already impressive season, the Texas Tech men's golf team received its highest ever-national seed on Wednesday, as the Red Raiders were named the No. 7 seed for next week's NCAA Men's Golf Championship. The 72-hole event will be held at the Crossriver Golf Club in Sunriver, Ore., May 31-June 3.
Texas Tech's appearance in the Championships will mark the sixth time in school history that the program has qualified for the event and the second time under head coach Greg Sands. The 1956 team was the first Red Raider squad to qualify, followed by teams in 1959, 1960, 1976 and 2002. The 1959 squad posted the program's highest finish in the championships at seventh place.
The Big 12 Conference has three teams in the field, including Oklahoma State, who earned the tournament's top seed after posting the team win at the NCAA Central Regional. Texas A&M is seeded sixth after the Aggies advanced the tournament by virtue of a third place finish at the Central Regional.
The Red Raiders, who are ranked No. 12 nationally, were also selected as the No. 7 seed for last week's NCAA East Regional and exceeded expectations with a third place finish to advance to the Championship field.
